Treking up the Volcano Nea Kameni in Santorini

28 Oct 2014

On our last full day in Santorini, we decided to take a boat excursion to the Volcano, Nea Kameni. We were transported to the small volcanic island in what I can only assume was an authentic pirate ship, and then we were guided up the rocky terrain to the top of the volcano. Once there, we had something like 45 minutes to an hour to walk around an explore.

The hike up only takes about 15-20 minutes, but the loose, rocky terrain makes it a bit more difficult. I mean, honestlyyy— to the girls dressed-up in sundresses, wedges and fedoras to go hiking up an active volcano—probably not the right gear to wear. It confounds me. I digress.

Anywayzzzzz, once you get to the top you have a 360º view of the island, and you can physically see and hear the seismic computers doing their job and monitoring the volcano's activity... It's pretty crazy! There are obvious paths for walking, but some people were going off path to get unique shots of the island, but since our group was behind in time, we weren't able to explore as much...

Overall, it was an interesting experience. It wasn't life-changing, but at least I can now say I've trekked an active volcano!

  1. Breathtaking. Really and truly! I love your photos!!!! And I'm having a nice laugh at your comment on inappropriate hiking gear. I saw so many women wearing wedges and mini skirts on some legit treks though steep and narrow pathways in old parts of the city and even hiking to the top of tea fields. I just don't get it!

  2. cuties. I mean, gorgeous views! ;) I love so many things about this, even the judging of the wedges - I'm always the first to point out the impractical shoes around me when we're exploring! xx
