Roadtripin' around the "Grand Canyon of France"

30 Jan 2015

James and I spent our first full day in the South of France zipping around from one end of Provence to the other. Mid-morning we set out from Marseille and headed North East into the Alps-de-Haute-Provence, and subsequently, the Gorges du Verdon.

After two hours of rolling French countryside, we arrived at the base of the mountain. Even at the bottom the views are pretty incredible, but once we caught a glimpse of the bright teal waters of the Le Verdon and Lac de Sainte-Croix, we knew we wanted better view.

As we made our way up the narrow and winding road of doom, I immediately started to doubt our decision to go further. My ears popped uncontrollably and my fear of driving off a cliff became wayyyy to realistic...

Luckily James got us up there safely and we didn't plunge to an untimely death.

It's kind of difficult to grasp the enormity of the "canyon" from my photographs, but it was quite the sight. The teal river still brings a smile to my face!

There were only a couple of areas to pull off, get out and take photographs, so once we finished with that, we really didn't have much of a plan. Ultimately, we decided to just keep going up and see where the road led us.

Luckily, it led us to lunch! Who knew?!
